Dinner Rolls
These are the fluffiest dinner rolls! They are easy to make rolls that are super soft and fluffy. They are also topped with honey butter.

Besides dessert, I always bring homemade dinner rolls to Thanksgiving and all the holidays! After after having them homemade, I can’t go back to store bought! They are super fluffy and soft. What really makes these is the honey butter on top.

Tips for making the rolls
Here are my tips, so yours turns out like this recipe!
- Tip 1: Make sure to scoop and level the flour into your measuring cup. If you stick the measuring cup into the flour, it will compact the flour down. This results in a lot more flour than you planned and the rolls will be drier and dense.
- Tip 2: The yeast is the big hero here, so if it is too hot or cold the rolls will not rise. You need to make sure the milk is 110F before adding the yeast and sugar. The sugar acts as food for the yeast to help it activate.
- Tip 3: After kneading for 5 minutes, I needed to add an additional 1/3rd cup of flour, it was a little too sticky without it. For the actual forming of the rolls, see my recipe video to watch me do it.

Ingredients
- 1 cup Milk, warmed to 110โ
- 2 1/4 tsp Active dry yeast, 7 grams
- 1 tsp White granulated sugar
- 1 Large egg, room temperature
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 1/2 TBSP White granulated sugar
- 5 TBSP Unsalted butter, room temperature and cubed
- 3 cups All-purpose flour, plus 1/3rd cup (42 grams)
- 2 TBSP Unsalted butter
- 1 TBSP Honey
Instructions
- In a microwave bowl, heat the milk in the microwave 50 seconds. Heat until it is 110โ. Sprinkle yeast and sugar on top of milk and let sit for 10 minutes. It will become foamy. This activates the yeast.1 cup Milk, 2 1/4 tsp Active dry yeast, 1 tsp White granulated sugar
- In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the lightly beaten egg, sugar, and butter. Using a stand mixer with a dough hook, mix on low speed until a dough starts to form. Then, switch to medium and knead for 5 minutes. *Make by hand instructions in recipe notes.1 Large egg, 1 tsp Salt, 1 1/2 TBSP White granulated sugar, 5 TBSP Unsalted butter, 3 cups All-purpose flour
- If the dough is really sticky, add an additional 1/3rd cup of flour. The goal is for the dough to be tacky, and can stick a little bit to the hands, but not overly sticky. The dough is ready when you do the window pane test. Where you spread the dough thinly between your fingers and aim towards the light, you should see light coming through.
- Preheat the oven to 200โ. Spray a large bowl with nonstick spray. Place the dough in the bowl. Place in the oven with a kitchen towel over the bowl, turn off the oven, and crack open the door. Rise for 1 hour.
- Place your fist into the center of risen dough, to knock out some air. Weigh the dough in grams and divide by 15 to get even rolls. Mine were 57 grams. Take your dough ball, pull the side to the bottom to create a rough ball, pinch the seams on the bottom, cup your hand around the roll (but not fully touching) and make circular motions. See my recipe video on my page to see me do it.
- Spray a 9X13-inch pan with baking nonstick spray. Place the rolls in the pan evenly. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise on the counter for 1 hour. They will be twice the size.
- Preheat the oven to 350โ. Bake for 20-25 minutes. They should be golden brown. After taking them out of the oven, mix together melted butter and honey. Use a pastry brush to brush the rolls with the honey butter. Serve the rolls warm!2 TBSP Unsalted butter, 1 TBSP Honey
Notes
Flour- Make sure flour is spooned and leveled or use a kitchen scale. Compacted flour can dry out the rolls.
Pull out dairy ingredients 2 hours before baking.
Making by hand:
Mix the wet ingredients into the dry by using a rubber spatula. Switch to using your hands to mix until a dough starts to form. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Knead using your hands for 5-8 minutes. Follow the rest of the instructions.
Overnight Instructions
Follow instructions until you have the rolled rolls. Place in the pan and cover with foil and place in the fridge. The next morning/day. Pull the rolls out of the fridge while the oven preheats.
